TRANSCRIPT:

This is Chairman John Zody, bringing you the weekly podcast for the Indiana Democratic Party.

The 2018 mid-term elections are about two weeks behind us now, and Indiana Democrats are celebrating some historic wins, looking at what we can do differently next time – and we’re looking ahead.

When the 2018 election cycle began, the Indiana Democratic Party set out to create every opportunity possible for new activists to get involved in the Democratic Party.

We held trainings and town hall meetings all across the state. We focused on candidate recruitment and ended up having more first-time, more Millennial and more female candidates than we’ve had in recent memory. And we focused on strengthening the tools necessary for grassroots activity to be successful across the state.

While we were disappointed that Senator Joe Donnelly wasn’t re-elected, we are proud to have had him serving in the Senate as a champion of Hoosier veterans, working families and protecting access to affordable healthcare.

At the state level, we are celebrating picking up four new seats in the Indiana General Assembly with JD Ford’s election to the State Senate and three new members headed to the House of Representatives after they defeated Republican incumbents. With gerrymandered districts, these wins tell us that Hoosier Democrats are on the move and that we have growth opportunities across the state. You know what else? These new members, along with those Democrats succeeding retiring Democrats – were all either first-time, Millennial or female candidates. And even with President Trump’s nearly 20 point win in our state two years ago, Indiana Democrats held onto or picked up NINE districts won by President Trumpin 2016.

Our new legislators are headed to the Statehouse because of their hard work, that of their teams – and efforts of many statewide.

We are also excited to be looking ahead to our 2019 municipal elections. With our first training already scheduled for candidates on January 12, 2019, we’re reaching out to Democrats across the state to be sure we are able to keep our Democratic Mayors and others in office, but also gain more City Clerks and Clerk-Treasurers and members of city and town councils.

Want to get involved? Sign up at indems.org/join and we’ll get you plugged in to get rolling on the 2019 elections. Have a question? E-mail us at info@indems.org, or follow us on Facebook and Twitter.

Only together can we fight for a better state for Hoosiers of all walks of life to succeed in working and raising a family by focusing on livable wages, strong early & public education, affordable healthcare, equality – and getting rid of gerrymandering so that we can have better elections.

Thank you for listening and Happy Thanksgiving.
