TRANSCRIPT:

  • This is Chairman John Zody, bringing you the weekly podcast for the Indiana Democratic Party.
  • This weekend, the Democrats from all over the state are gathered in French Lick, Indiana for our annual IDEA Weekend.
  • This tradition, now 135 years young, allows Democrats to gather together to visit, catch up, do some political business and get energized for our fall elections.
  • And I can assure you, people are energized not just for 2016, but for the 2015 elections.
  • In November, Hoosiers have the opportunity to elect Mayors, Clerks, Clerk-Treasurers and councilmembers in our state’s cities and towns.
  • Whether you are able to vote in this year’s elections or not, what happens in our cities and towns affects you.
  • Everything from the business you visit in your downtown, the parks you enjoy with you friends and loved ones, or the roads you drive on – all of these things are impacted by local elected officials.
  • That’s why I cannot overstate the importance of our local elections in Indiana this year.
  • Hoosiers elect people to do things – and when Democrats are elected, good things happen.
  • Look no further than the City of Fort Wayne, which is seeing vibrant regrowth in its downtown, along with Kokomo, Sullivan, South Bend and New Albany.
  • As the Pence Administration and the legislative supermajorities continue to strangle the ability of Mayors and town councils to solve problems for our state’s future – Democratic Mayors across the state are doing more with less every single day. They are showing us that government works on the ground in Indiana.
  • Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for what’s happening at the Statehouse.
  • In just over two years in office, Governor Pence has managed to place the two things Indiana is known best for in jeopardy: Hoosier Hospitality and the Crossroads of America.
  • I-65 is still closed going north – impacting our state’s economy every single day.
  • And while the state continues to recover from the economic panic the governor caused earlier this year – we’re still wondering when he and the legislative supermajorities will decide to truly invest in our state’s infrastructure – AND in our children to make Pre-K universal across Indiana.
  • Until that time comes, Democrats in Indiana will continue to talk about ways in which we can do better for Indiana’s economy, our education system – and for the overall well-being of Hoosiers.
  • That starts with electing people to local office this fall that believe that government can be a force for good when you work efficiently to solve problems for those around you.
  • Anything less is just unacceptable.
  • Thank you for listening.
