WRTV: As Congressman, Gov. Pence Co-Sponsored Change to Birthright Citizenship Rules
INDIANAPOLIS – Yesterday, Indiana media asked Governor Pence about H.R. 1868, a bill he cosponsored while in Congress which proposed redefining birthright citizenship in the United States. The “Birthright Citizenship Act of 2009”, cosponsored by then Representative Pence, is directly in line with the national conversation being had by presidential frontrunners. Donald Trump and Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush believe children born in the United States with immigrant parents should not be considered U.S. citizens under the United States Constitution.
This controversial idea should have been a red flag to Hoosiers that when it comes to making decisions for the people of Indiana, Pence will choose his ideology ahead of the well-being of Indiana 100% of the time.
“Mike Pence’s call to redefine birthright citizenship was a precursor to how he would always put his own ideology ahead of the hardworking Hoosier and the overall well-being of Indiana. Pence’s ideology led to the $250 million panic following his signature to RFRA, a law that allows businesses to openly discriminate against LGBT Hoosiers,” said Drew Anderson, communications director for the Indiana Democratic Party. “In just three years, Pence has managed to put Indiana’s valued reputations, including ‘Hoosier Hospitality’, in jeopardy. Hoosiers deserve to have a governor who will welcome everyone and help solve today’s problems for them. As we’ve learned, this governor is not Mike Pence.”
