Indiana Democratic Party To Challenge Todd Young’s Ballot Petitions

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Democratic Party announced that it will formally challenge Rep. Todd Young’s U.S. Senate candidate petitions in Indiana’s First Congressional District. According to the Indiana Election Division, any U.S. Senate candidate must submit 500 validated signatures within each congressional district. The petitions filed by Young’s campaign reflect that only 498 were submitted from the First District – two below the state’s requirement.

“Todd Young claims to have solid support across Indiana – but now it appears he might have cut corners to try to catch up to front-runner Marlin Stutzman. While he has succeeded in flip-flopping on many important issues facing Hoosiers today, Todd Young should have put his focus solely on becoming a credible candidate. As it stands today – Young’s ability to be on the ballot for the U.S. Senate in Indiana could be in jeopardy,” said John Zody, Chairman. “The IDP is formally challenging Young’s petitions because it is imperative that every candidate seeking office in Indiana is determined to be eligible – and it appears Todd Young may not be eligible. Hoosiers want someone who will do the tough work, look at the small details, and bring some Hoosier commonsense to Washington – not someone who can’t even do the bare minimum.”

In addition to the apparent shortage of valid signatures, the IDP is also examining possible issues with individual signatures and petition sheets within the 498 counted petitions. Information on those issues is forthcoming.
