Indiana Democratic Party 1-26-19 Weekly Radio Address Podcast
Chairman John Zody and the Indiana Democratic Party Weekly Radio Address:
TRANSCRIPT:
This is Chairman John Zody, bringing you the weekly podcast for the Indiana Democratic Party.
On Friday, President Trump finally reopened the government by signing a temporary funding bill that includes back pay for federal workers and no border wall money. In three weeks, we could back in the same place.
The 800,000 federal workers across the nation are able to breathe a sigh of relief – for now. Every day Americans were asked to just get by, in this increasingly expensive economy, without any income. It was a hardship felt right here in Indiana as more than 5,000 federal workers were furloughed or showed up to work without pay for 35 days.
It was great to see community leaders step in, like our very own Indianapolis Congressman Andre Carson and Mayor Joe Hogsett, who took action with a community resources event. We have seen food banks shoulder more clients, and our friends in labor organize strikes and deliver lunches to air traffic controllers at the Indianapolis airport.
While we took action to help our neighbors that were adversely impacted, President Trump and his officials questioned why workers were suffering. As if missing two paychecks won’t impact buying groceries, paying for mortgages or cars. This is the out-of-touch leadership that has hurt our economy and our faith in democracy.
Even though the shutdown has ended, for now, we are still moving forward in addressing the relevant concerns of Hoosier families. These issues start at the kitchen table and we need elected officials to understand that’s where most people make the tough decisions based on the policy mistakes of elected officials who lack the understanding of what Americans and Hoosiers really face.
Our fight is for the long haul, especially in Indiana. We need more folks to come off the sidelines in 2019. You can get involved with the Party at indems.org/join.
