Indiana Democratic Party 1-15-17 Weekly Radio Address Podcast

Chairman John Zody and the Indiana Democratic Party weekly radio address:

“It will be imperative that Governor Holcomb rise above Mike Pence’s shadow and not surrender to the out-of-touch ideologies of the GOP supermajorities.”

TRANSCRIPT:

This is Chairman John Zody, bringing you the weekly podcast for the Indiana Democratic Party.

With a new year brings a new governor for the state of Indiana.

As Hoosiers, we want to offer our best wishes to our new governor as he comes into office.

But we hope this week marks a much-needed new era for Hoosiers.

It will be imperative that Governor Holcomb rise above Mike Pence’s shadow and not surrender to the out-of-touch ideologies of the GOP supermajorities.

Indiana cannot bear another RFRA or a law that endangers Hoosier women and their families.

Instead, we must address lagging wages for our workers, our crumbling infrastructure system, and a lackluster Pre-K program.

There is still much to do to make sure Indiana is a leader in the 21st Century.

But in order to accomplish this goal, we must always remember that Hoosier Common Sense will always prevail over party lines and ideology.

On Tuesday, Governor Holcomb will give his first State of the State Address, and the IDP will be watching him and following his message on social media with important messages of our own as we work to hold him and Statehouse Republicans accountable.

In Washington, Republican leaders have begun a fast-tracked process to repeal the Affordable Care Act, and we need your help to stop it by joining the National Day of Action tomorrow, on Sunday, January 15.

When the health care debate began back in 2009, there was one thing on which Republicans and Democrats could agree: that our health care system was broken.

We know the ACA isn’t perfect, and there is more work to do to improve affordability, to reduce health care costs, and expand access to care.

If those pushing for repeal get their way, more than 30 million Americans would lose their health insurance — 82 percent of whom are working families.

Prescription drug prices would increase by more than $1,000 a year for over 5 million seniors and people with disabilities, and we would return to the days when insurance companies could deny coverage based on pre-existing conditions.

In addition to attending a rally or gathering in your community, please also consider joining us for what’s called a statewide “flash” phone bank tomorrow. At 3 p.m. local time, call or text five people you know to tell them why the ACA is important to you.

And also, let’s remember that Monday, January 16, is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and I hope all of you will consider participating in some type of community service. Whether it’s continuing to talk about the importance of healthcare, or pitching in for an organization in your community, the importance of this weekend is commemorating the service, and the life, of Dr. King.

Please follow the IDP on Facebook and Twitter. Simply search INDems – that’s I-N-D-E-M-S on Facebook and Twitter, and follow us to get the latest news about our candidates and what we’re doing to hold our counterparts at the Statehouse accountable.

Only together can we work towards a brighter and more progressive state for Hoosiers of all walks to life to fully thrive in.

Thank you for listening.
