This is Chairman John Zody, bringing you the weekly podcast for the Indiana Democratic Party.
Think about this for a moment. There hasn’t been a Democrat in the U.S. Senate representing Alabama for two decades. That all changed this week. This week we saw Doug Jones elected to the United States Senate.
Many would call it an improbable win. Many more would say it was the result of Jones running against what will go down in history as one of the worst candidates to win a Party’s nomination in Roy Moore.
Yes, Roy Moore was a horrendous candidate. He was someone who had no place on the ballot and his loss this week will hopefully mark the end of his political career.
His candidacy will forever be a stain on the Republican National Committee, whose leaders chose short-term political gain over the moral high ground and lost everything.
But Doug Jones’ victory in Alabama was about more than Roy Moore’s doomed candidacy.
It came down to three things: candidate and campaign – and of course, voters.
Doug Jones is a plus candidate. The kid from Fairfield, as he referred to himself, served honorably as a United States Attorney in Alabama.

Nominated by a Democrat and confirmed by a Republican Senate, Jones locked up the Klansmen responsible for the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing. Jones fought for the hope of justice and fairness for all Alabamians and he had the record to back it up.
That matters.
Jones also ran a campaign focused on the issues. He didn’t just run against Moore…though as we saw, there was plenty of material. He ran FOR something. Jones ran on health care, ensuring we didn’t go backward and that Alabamians have access to high quality, affordable health care.
He ran on the economy, and investing in our educational system so kids have the resources they need to attend world-class schools and gain the skills to compete in the 21st century economy, no matter where they live. Jones acknowledged that some Americans are being left behind and all deserve a place in this economy. Jones made equal pay for equal work another key element of the race.
Jones laid out a vision for Alabama and he campaigned hard on those issues. And as a result, voters in Alabama exceeded turnout projections all over the state. People saw the issues and the candidates, and made their choice known loud and clear for a Democrat in a red state.

That’s how Hoosier Democrats will translate what happened in Alabama to 2018. We’ll keep running on the issues and laying out a clear vision Hoosiers can identify with. It’s what Hoosiers expect.
It’s an exciting time because like never before, Hoosier Democrats are taking action. Buckle up, 2018 is going to be a good year.
