Indiana Democratic Party 1-20-18 Weekly Radio Address

Chairman  John Zody and the 1-20-18 Indiana Democratic Party weekly radio address:

If this is the “winning” candidate Trump boasted about, it’s going to be a long three years.

TRANSCRIPT:

This is Chairman John Zody, bringing you the weekly podcast for the Indiana Democratic Party.
Today marks one year since President Trump took office. Has it only been one year? It feels like 10 at times. The divisiveness can be exhausting – but maybe not as much as the constant excuses for why he and Congress just can’t govern. As I record this, the federal government has been shutdown for nearly eight hours and counting. For those needing a reminder: Republicans controls Congress AND the White House. A shutdown under these circumstances is a first.
The President inherited a growing economy and Republican majorities in Congress. What has he done with it? He’s sown economy uncertainty, attempted to strip millions of Americans of health insurance and spiked premiums for millions more.
He signed a tax bill that raises taxes on middle-class families to fund tax breaks for the wealthy and major corporations. The 215 layoffs at Carrier this month remind us the President isn’t keeping his promises. Jobs are still moving overseas. The cost of living is still rising.
If this is the “winning” candidate Trump boasted about, it’s going to be a long three years.
But there have been some positives, and I want to focus on those. Really, there have been.
His presidency has energized millions of Americans and tens of thousands of Hoosiers. Last year, hundreds of thousands of women across the country and right here in Indiana marched. Today they’ll march again and in November they’ll run and win.
President Trump’s time in office has generated many firsts, but the firsts that will ultimately have the greatest impact are those Hoosiers and Americans who are putting their name on the ballot for the first time as Democrats. Who are deciding to step up and get involved for the first time.
Just this week Hoosier Democrats jammed the phone lines at the Statehouse calling on their state senators to support an independent redistricting commission. That’s what this new level of engagement looks like.
Hoosiers everywhere are taking action. More folks than ever before are getting involved and are running for office themselves.
I know some folks will be tempted to focus on the uncertainty and division the Trump Presidency has generated – and those cannot go unnoticed or forgotten.
But with under 300 days to the 2018 election, it’s time to focus on what we’re doing to write the next chapter. I’m ready to do everything I can do elect Hoosier Democrats.
Please follow the IDP on Facebook and Twitter. Simply search INDems – that’s I-N-D-E-M-S on Facebook and Twitter, and follow us to get the latest news about our candidates and what we’re doing to hold our counterparts at the Statehouse and in Washington accountable.
Only together can we fight for fairness, the future and work toward a brighter and better state for Hoosiers of all walks of life to succeed in working and raising a family.
Thank you for listening.
