Teacher pay in Indiana continues its downward slide

Teacher pay in Indiana continues its downward slide

A Northwest Times article today highlights the declining pay of teachers in Indiana. This attack on teachers was more evident this past General Assembly session as appointed State Senator Andy Zay led the fight to replace licensed teachers with unlicensed replacements. Zay’s measure was defeated but has promised to revisit the controversial replacement if re-elected.

Nationally, teacher pay is 5 percent lower than it was in 2009, adjusted for inflation, according to the U.S. Department of Education. It is 1.6 percent below their average earnings in 1999.

In Indiana, teacher pay has suffered the biggest inflation-adjusted drop since the 1999-2000 school year, according to the Department of Education: Teachers now earn almost 16 percent less than they did two decades ago.

Zay’s challenger this fall, Gary Snyder, issued the following statement:

“The appointed State Senator fails to recognize the real problem is his continued attempts at chipping away at public education and our professional teachers. His reckless proposal did nothing to support our teachers or advance a quality education for all of our children.”
