Grant County Democratic Party Releases Statement on Zay’s Racist Remarks

The Grant County Democratic Party is disappointed in the leadership — or rather, lack thereof — on display by state Senator Andy Zay, who represents parts of Marion and Grant County.

We rebuke his statement claiming that racism does not exist (and his excuse that he simply used careless words). The city of Marion is a diverse community that continues to grapple with the very real effects of racism — both in the past, and in the present. We know first hand the ripple effect that hate and discrimination can have. We know the hurt it causes to individuals and the damage it does in society. Mr. Zay’s words show how disconnected he is from his constituents who live with the reality of racism, both institutional and personal, every day.

We encourage voters in District 17 to send Mr. Zay a message in November that he is wrong, by voting him out.

The Grant County Democratic Party Central Committee,

Terry Stodghill, Chair
Patricia Gibson, Vice Chair
Torri Williams, Secretary
Chuck Griffin, Treasurer
