Indiana Democratic Party 2-2-19 Weekly Radio Address Podcast
Chairman John Zody and the 2-2-19 Indiana Democratic Party Weekly Radio Address Podcast.
TRANSCRIPT:
This is Chairman John Zody, bringing you the weekly podcast for the Indiana Democratic Party.
Indiana election laws have been stuck in the past for decades now, and as a result, our elections are falling behind the rest of the country. On Election Day, the polls are only open from 6 am to 6 pm, and consequently, working Hoosiers risk not getting to cast their ballot.
To make things more complicated, Indiana requires voters to be registered at least 29 days before an election day. Other states around the country have adopted same day voter registration to ensure no one has to sit out an election because they missed a deadline.
Hoosier Democrats are out front on this issue because we know that good things happen when we all vote. We have seen turnout hit a slump in our state because much of the unnecessary obstacles put in front of every day voters in Indiana create problems. Our solutions match the tone of the rest of the nation in that voting is a right and should be accessible to all that are eligible.
We won some battles in Marion County to expand early voting locations. However, it has to be a cohesive statewide effort to position Indiana to lead the nation in voter turnout. And when it comes down to it, our Republican colleagues across the aisle have only blocked this progress.
We can’t allow this to go on. From strict Voter ID laws tothe insecure elections without a paper trail – we must do better. We can make voting more accessible by extending polling hours to 8pm – and having same day registration. We must also increase opportunities for Hoosiers to vote absentee – early and by mail. Democracy works when we all participate, and we are going to keep fighting for Hoosiers to have a voice in their government. By doing these things, we can make our elections fairer for everyone.
Our fight is for the long haul, especially in Indiana. We need more folks to come and get off the sidelines in 2019. You can get involved with the Party at indems.org/join and get involved in our municipal races this year.
