“I was struck by Congressman Lewis’ words on Tuesday. Referring to his time standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Dr. King, Lewis said, “He taught us how to live. He taught us how to stand up, to be brave, courageous and bold and to never give up.”

TRANSCRIPT:

This is Chairman John Zody, bringing you the weekly podcast for the Indiana Democratic Party.
This past Tuesday, I had the opportunity to have a window into the past and witness history being made. On the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s assassination, Congressman John Lewis of Georgia, and Kerry Kennedy, Sen. Kennedy’s daughter, returned to Indianapolis to remember the power of Robert Kennedy’s words and to remind us: we still have a long way to go to realize Dr. King’s dream.
On the evening of April 4, 1968, Presidential candidate Robert Kennedy took to the stage in Indianapolis during what was to be a campaign rally and, instead, informed the crowd that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had be killed earlier that day in Memphis, Tennessee.
For many who were there that night, it was the first they had heard of the news. Kennedy spoke of the pain and grief of losing his own brothers. In much of the country, the news of Dr. King’s assassination touched off civil unrest, but in Indianapolis, RFK’s speech was largely credited with preventing any conflict.
Flash forward 50 years, and US Senator Joe Donnelly and Congressman André Carson have fought to memorialize the significance of RFK’s speech and Dr. King’s legacy. Donnelly and Carson worked with their Republican colleagues to have the Kennedy-King park in Indianapolis added to the National Civil Rights Network. President Trump signed their bill into law just a few days ahead of the 50th anniversary.
I was struck by Congressman Lewis’ words on Tuesday. Referring to his time standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Dr. King, Lewis said, “He taught us how to live. He taught us how to stand up, to be brave, courageous and bold and to never give up.”
They are words we can stand hearing over and over. The time is always right to do what is right. As Hoosier Democrats, as people, we’ve got to stand up. We’ve got to fight for what we believe in.

Thank you for listening.
